Snorkeling sites
you can access with boat
Snorkeling Around Koh Phi Phi
Three islands in the Koh Phi Phi archipelago offer accessible snorkeling sites:
-
Koh Phi Phi Don
-
Koh Phi Phi Leh
-
Bamboo Island (Koh Mai Phai)
Koh Phi Phi Don
Although it is the only inhabited island in the archipelago, many of Koh Phi Phi Don’s snorkeling sites are only accessible by boat:
-
Along the entire west coast of the island, at the base of the cliffs.
-
On the northwestern tip of the island, behind Laem Tong Beach, just outside Loh Lana Bay.

Koh Phi Phi Leh:
This island is home to the stunning Pileh Bay, also known as Pileh Lagoon, as well as one of the most famous bays in the world: Maya Bay.
Maya Bay was made famous by the movie The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Virginie Ledoyen, and Guillaume Canet.
To protect newly restored corals and the population of blacktip reef sharks, swimming from the beach at Maya Bay is prohibited. However, it is possible to observe marine life with a mask and snorkel from a boat at the entrance of the bay.
Snorkeling Sites Open to Visitors :
-
East coast: Between Viking Cave and the northern tip of Koh Phi Phi Leh.
-
West coast: At Palong Bay, located in the northern part of the island’s west coast.

Bamboo Island (Koh Mai Phai)
This island is very different from the rest of the archipelago.
It is relatively flat and almost completely surrounded by a beach. Bamboo Island is protected by coral reefs.
These reefs help stabilize the accumulation of sand and provide habitats for a whole ecosystem that can be observed with just a mask and snorkel.
Marine Life You Can See While Snorkeling at Koh Phi Phi
A wide variety of species can be observed :
-
Butterflyfish – brightly patterned, often seen in small groups around coral reefs.
-
Sergeant majors – curious fish that will approach you closely.
-
Anemonefish – including several species of clownfish, usually hiding among the tentacles of sea anemones.
-
Surgeonfish – recognizable by their sleek, elongated bodies.
-
Damselfish – some species may try to intimidate you, even nipping if you get too close to their sandy or reef territory… fortunately, they only measure a few centimeters.
-
Triggerfish – one species is known to be highly territorial and sometimes aggressive at certain dive sites, though this is not the case at Koh Phi Phi.
-
Parrotfish – grazing on coral with their beak‑like mouths.
-
Needlefish – slender and often seen just below the surface.
-
Blacktip reef sharks – rarely spotted deeper than 5–6 meters.
-
And many more…
